HIPAA

What is HIPAA?
HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, is a federal law enacted in the United States to address and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the health care system.
The most significant aspects of HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, are the Privacy Rule and Security Rule. These rules set standards for the protection of individuals' medical records and other personal health information (PHI). These rules apply to covered entities (which include health plans, healthcare clearinghouses, and certain healthcare providers) and their business associates, mandating measures to protect the privacy and security of PHI, providing individuals with certain rights over their health information, and setting limitations on the use and disclosure of their PHI.
